Mid-Season Promotion/Relegation Schedule

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi all

The mid-season promotions and relegations of Teams and Members from each league, would ideally take place exactly half way through the season - so after the first 12 Sprints.

But, the close spacing of Sprints in July, which are due to take place as follows:

Sprint #11 - 2026-07-02 16:00 UTC - 2026-07-05 16:00 UTC
Sprint #12 - 2026-07-16 16:00 UTC - 2026-07-19 16:00 UTC
Sprint #13 - 2026-07-23 16:00 UTC - 2026-07-26 16:00 UTC

and after which the F1 mid-season break takes place until:

Sprint #14 - 2026-08-20 16:00 UTC - 2026-08-23 16:00 UTC

So, it makes sense for me to compute the relevant stats and make any relevant changes, during the same break period as F1.

And that will then leave 11 Sprints to take place until the end of the season.

Hi Tim,
Can you remind us what the rules are for promotion or relegation for teams and individuals?
Many thanks in anticipation and for all you are doing to keep FB going.

Hiya

It is basically a very simple calculation, based on average BOINC CREDITS earned per Sprint

More in depth explanation:
In basic terms, I log all the CREDITS earned by each Team and each Member in each League which gives me a TOTAL.

I then work out the average CREDITS earned for each Sprint that the Team or the Member took part in. (So if a Team/Member only took part in a few Sprints, then they are not disadvantaged compared to those who took part in EVERY Sprint).

This then allows me to compare Team and Member "performances" over the previous period and it is then very easy to sort these by decreasing average credits per Sprint....which then allows Teams and Members to be grouped together into the 4 Leagues by their relative performance levels.

So, any Team or Member who has *tried* to compete will be put into Leagues 1 through 3 commensurate with their "crunching ability". I also look at the number of Sprints they actually took part in, if any Team or Member is "on the cusp" between promotion or relegation, so there is a little subjective assessment given and those who compete in more Sprints will be given the benefit.

Any Team or Member who appears to have made little or NO EFFORT to take part (as they have earned very few total credits in most of the previous Sprints), is/are demoted to League 4.

Sorry for the long explanation !

Hi all

The first set of League Updates have now been tabulated.

These results are based on 12 of the 13 Sprints - as the stats for the Sprint #12 (MilkyWay) are still missing - but I doubt this affects the League tables.

Team League Table 1:

Average BOINC credits in the Sprints earned: 585,149,919 per team

AMD took part in 12 Sprints to get 2 FB points and earned a total of 65,350,144 BOINC credits - Demoted to League 2

Keep The Fire Alive! earned 0 FB points and does not appear to have contributed any BOINC credits in the Sprints. - Demoted to League 4

A "must do better" hint goes to LITOMYSL Boinc Team Czech Republic Team, as their results were borderline to being demoted. - Continues in League 1

Team League Table 2:

Average BOINC credits in the Sprints earned: 80,098,029 per team

Ars Technica took part in 12 Sprints, to get 276 FB points and earned a total of 254,876,288 BOINC credits - Promoted to League 1

A "could do better" hint goes to Crunching@EVGA Team as they were borderline to be promoted. - Stays in League 2

Team League Table 3:

Average BOINC credits in the Sprints earned: 13,397,112 per team

BOINC Synergy took part in 11 Sprints, gained 149 FB points and earned 40,471,546 BOINC credits - Promoted to League 2

No other team did enough to warrant promotion.

Team League Table 4:

The 2 teams in this League only competed in ONE Sprint - no change

The Team League tables will be update accordingly.

re: Member League table changes - these are now being worked on, but there's a lot more results to check over and to assign to specific League tables - so that should be ready by next weekend.

Hi all

I had hoped to submit the updated Members League table listing, showing those members who had been promoted into a higher Members League table, before the Sprint started today.

Unfortunately, a coding error is making this difficult to achieve but Sebastien is aware of it (or should be, if he checks his email) and I hope he can fix things BEFORE the Sprint ends on Sunday. And then the result of this Sprint will take effect on certain Members new standings.

If it cannot be fixed in time, then the promotions and relegations will be uploaded afterwards.

Hi all

Sebastien has come to the rescue and the problem with the FB server has been resolved today.

So, here is a list of the 14 Members who have been rewarded for their efforts and moved into a higher League as well the 24 Members who might do better in a lower League:

Promotions:

Old League> New League - Member Name

2>1 bill1024
2>1 Dingo
2>1 gemini8
2>1 herby44
2>1 Ron Shurtz [BlackOps]
2>1 Skyman
2>1 yodap

3>1 [AF>Libristes] nico8313

3>2 Michael H.W. Weber

4>1 Beyond
4>1 Polaxis

4>2 Garioch Loon
4>2 [AF>Amis des Lapins] Ceclo

4>3 OffDutyTaoist

Relegations:

Old League> New League - Member Name

1>2 Cruncher Pete
1>2 ChelseaOilman
1>2 Detlef Erdmann
1>2 NekdDrgn
1>2 RKN-Cluster
1>2 Sphynx
1>2 [DPC] hansR

1>3 NEO83
1>3 [AF] Kalianthys

1>4 zombie67 [MM]

2>3 BlisteringSheep
2>3 mikey
2>3 Schildkroete
2>3 tazzduke
2>3 UBT - wbiz
2>3 [AF>Belgique] bill1170

2>4 Alan St-Pierre
2>4 Jozef J
2>4 LtFerrante

3>4 Dark Angel
3>4 Heijo
3>4 Nimrud2023
3>4 Tom Polski
3>4 [AF>Occitania] gillou

The above has been carefully calculated taking into account the following:
* Total Number of BOINC credits earned in all of the preceding 13 Sprints in 2026
* Total Number of Sprints they actually participated in
* Average Number of BOINC Credits earned in each Sprint they took part in

The idea is that the "big hitters" are now all in League #1, and those with fewer overall BOINC credits, have been moved into appropriate lower leagues, commensurate with their actual performance in all the Sprints.

You can assume therefore that those Members who take part in the most Sprints, and earn lots of BOINC credits, have risen to the top League, while those who take part in fewer Sprints, will (in general) be moved to lower Leagues, where their performance is very similar to other members.

Please note that ALL previously awarded FB points earned on Sprints (up to yesterday) are RETAINED, but the Marathons points will be adjusted on a daily basis, based on the cumulative total of BOINC credits earned through the year on each project and in direct comparison to other Members in the same League.

Nice work Tim!
It looks like there was a lot to do along the way.
I seem to have already been moved into my new league EXCEPT for the purposes of the current sprint where I’m still labouring away in my previous league. Just thought it would be worth pointing it out in case it might indicate a problem. Hopefully it doesn’t.

Hi Tim

I'm not bothered what league I am in, but using my results as an example and your criteria, I don't see how I was demoted.

Up to the current sprint I had around 48 sprint points, and taken part in nearly every sprint.

This would put me in position 8 in the updated league 2 sprint which is an long way from the relegation zone. I am also around halfway down the league in the marathon but you imply little weight is given to the marathon (which makes sense, most of the competitiveness is the sprints).

Perhaps you have too much weight on credits from the high scoring projects where I would lose out significantly - in fact, I believe just one project (primegrid) achieves more sprint credits than all the rest of the projects put together in almost every case (not fully checked)?

As I said, I'm not bothered what league I am in, I'm just concerned that the system hasn't really been representative for a lot of volunteers.

Hi

It took a bit of thinking about and looking at each of the 114 members specific stats and then trying to establish which league each member should be in, to try and keep everything fair - so similar BOINC earning members are grouped in Leagues where others are earning about the same each Sprint."

Which gives people more chance of earning FB points, rather than being blown away by someone with more CPU/GPU resources.

Yup - I noticed this as well. So, I was hoping that Sebastien would fix the League tables update issue BEFORE the current Sprint started...

And I updated the League membership AFTER it started and I hoped it would take the changes in it's stride....but that didn't happen.

I think that the "Sprint" "stats results tables" were created as soon as the Sprint started, so for this Sprint the original Sprint League tables were in force - but the Marathon League tables have been updated.

So, there is a slight discrepancy between Marathon and Sprint "tables"...but that should make any difference as once the next Sprint starts, it should take into account the new League tables.

Hiya

Yes, it's a tricky thing to try and categorise the individual stats for over 110 members and try and lump them together into 4 Leagues...

And yes, my "workings" spreadsheet confirm that you took part in 12 Marathons and have earned 48 FB points in the process. :-)

The weighting I use is quite subjective and is based on some simple maths in the hope that I can groups members with similar resources together - as there is no point being in a particular League if someone has LITTLE or NO chance of earning *any* FB Sprint points.

You have earned 4,879,815 BOINC credits along the way.

Comparing this to other League 2 Members, your total BOINC credits earned on Sprints is significantly less than other League 2 Members, who in the same period have earned between 10 million and over 100 million BOINC credits. Of course, some Sprint projects issue higher credits than others, and also they may feature both CPU and GPU applications, which of course will favour those with the right host resources available.

(From my spreadsheet I can see that members who took part in Amicable, srBase and Einstein Sprints earned a similar number of BOINC credits, compared to PrimeGrid - and in the case of Sprint #3 for Amicable, 1.8 billion BOINC credits were earned in League #1 compared to about 380 million on Sprint #1 for PrimeGrid. For Sprint #9 (also PrimeGrid) only 280 million BOINC credits were earned by League #1 members).

Doing the same comparison with League 3 Members, the range of BOINC credits earned is between just under 1 million and about 10 million, with an average of 5,622,966 BOINC credits per Member.

So, in League 3, you are more likely to earn MORE FB points in a Sprint than by staying in League 2. :-)

Tim
